Offsite Contamination

Drilling on West St.
As is my custom I try to drive by the MURF site daily just to see what might be going on. Anyway on Friday there were two drill rigs putting holes into the outside northbound lane. One rig was a caterpillar type and the other a truck mount. Not a surprise as council had just approved spending $59,000 more on off site testing and the Shaheen & Peaker van was there. What was a big surprise to me was that yesterday which was Saturday the truck mount rig was there drilling again. I thought to myself something is up and wondered if they had found some nasties and had to make sure where it extended to. So last night at just after six pm I took a drive over and was really floored to find the rig about 200 feet south of where they were at noon still drilling. This area is about 100ft. north of where the picture below shows the caterpillar rig drilling on Friday. Saturday night 6pm in the summer and still working????? Doesn't make sense so I was then convinced that they indeed had found some nasties. You see with the sewer construction on West St. moving north it makes sense that if the nasties are down there they would have to determine how far the construction people could go north and be notified by Monday morning before work resumed. Remember the health implications of VC gases is horrendous.

Picture of truck mount unit in front of GL&V office where three holes were drilled

This morning I got a call from Colleen Cooney that a friend of hers had called saying that West St. from Queen to past Cochran was closed off completely. There was a fire truck, police and a backhoe. I hurried on down to find the fire truck, unmarked police car and the OPP Forensic van in front of the middle steel building facing West St. There was a ladder going up to the upper level window and fire hoses on the ground going up into the window. Obviously there had been a fire and most likely because of forensics being there some form of crime had taken place. So what happened? Could it be that while drilling VC gas found a pathway into the building?? Remember it only takes 42C to ignite VC gas and we know there is lots of it under the MURF site. We also know that there is a south east flow of groundwater from the site. This building is directly southeast. Let's hope that we will be given the story quickly and honestly. If the plume migration did cause this fire then all property owners must be warned and immediate steps must be taken to protect people and property. At this point we just don't know.

Here is what I encountered when I got down there earlier. I just this minute got a call telling me that there are three more emergency vehicles now on site. I will post this and head out right away and add to this story if necessary.
I just got back from West St. No one seems to want to tell us what is going on but as we stood on the street a member of the OPP SWAT unit went running by in full gear with automatic weapon in hand. About 15 minutes later two more showed up. We also observed a member of the canine unit. So we are still no wiser about what has happened but it does seem very serious. If anyone has more information let me know and I will post it to the site.

Open Windows Strange Sight
Hey! What's going on??? I was driving south on West St and as I passed the four metal clad buildings owned by GL&V I noticed three had their top windows opened. Being in a bit of a hurry I decided to go back later and snap some pictures. As you can clearly see these top windows have actually been removed. Why?? Why just as fall and winter is approaching??? Won't birds fly in or squirrels and maybe raccoons move in?? Why Oh! why???
You may recall that there was a $350,000 fire back in August in one of these buildings. The story then and I suppose now is that someone had broken into this building and started the fire. Now the building contains old wood patterns which are not particularly valuable to anyone except to GL&V to make castings from. In order to steal these patterns a truck and tow motor would have been needed. As there have been no culprits found we assume the police are still working on the case. If you scroll down to Aug. 16 & 18 stories you will refresh your memory.
So I began wondering, why leave these windows open if there is a gang of pattern thieves roaming the country side. If we have had one break in why make it easier for these villains by opening a window for them?? Aren't the police and GL& V concerned these guys will return and clean out the other three warehouses??? Boy if I had been broken into I would be putting bars on the windows not opening them. Wouldn't you???
Again my little brain is twisting and turning until "Bingo" I have a brain storm. Could it be that there was no break in??? Do you suppose we have been misled as to the circumstances of this fire??? We have not heard much about fire number two on this site a week or so after the first either, have we??? Wonder Why?? Could we have been right about these fires being caused by VC gas seeping into the building??? Remember VC gas ignites at 42 degrees C which is less than your hot water is in the pipe. Say you had a bit of gas leaking into your house and were unable to stop it. What would you do??? 1. Light a cigarette and think about?? 2. Close up the house real tight so that the gas couldn't escape outside but have a very good chance of another fire or even a explosion?? Or would you throw open some windows and doors and deprive the gas from collecting and catching fire??? If you picked #1 you are an idiot. If you picked # 2 you are still an idiot but possibly still alive as long as you didn't stay in the house??? If you picked door number three you could be an executive working for GL&V as well as Fire Chief and Police Chief all rolled into one.
So where does council and their MURF experts come into this. Well until these geniuses pushed the plume off site GL&V had been a safe place to do business I suppose. But lo and behold these guys tinker and now windows must be kept open. Spontaneous fires ignite and pattern burglaries are made easier by the new open door (window) policy. Yet as we speculate Mayor Pinocchio and the Puppets don't want to release the new test results. You see just before the first fire the experts were drilling monitoring wells in front of these buildings. The wells were harvested for samples but as yet our friends at city hall won't release these results. PLC members have been notified that these results won't be shared with them at their next meeting which isn't till Oct. 11. Why??? Is there a good reason. Could it be they have not received the test results back yet??? No it has been confirmed that indeed the city has the results. Is it because they don't have time to e-mail these results to PLC members?? Or is it because the results are bad and they are trying to work out a "spin" ? Remember when I wrote that, before these people release "Bad News" they always come out with support for the MURF site, ridiculous as it maybe?? Well we have Colin McKim's article written and re-written and then we have Doug Lewis' article this week. Well folks the only thing left might be one or two letters to the editor in favour and then we will get the "Bad News". So expect in the next few days or weeks to see another round of requests for more money to do more testing because the test results were bad and more testing is required. Yup! that's how it works and has worked for the last few years. Think I might be wrong?? We'll see. Have patience grasshopper the truth will prevail. Meanwhile I will drive by these properties just a bit faster than normal. Wouldn't want to get involved with any spontaneous combustion or God help us from those nasty pattern burglars???

Comment: I wrote this article before Fridays Packet was delivered. It seems the City's "BAD NEWS" has now been released. The front page story by Colin McKim states "When vinyl chloride turned up in samples taken off-site this summer". Bingo here is the bad news. What does this mean??? Well for anyone owning property anywhere nearby I would suggest you get yourself a lawyer. Might I recommend our most able lawyer Eric Gillespi who represents Allam Millard/Citizens Coalition and has won twice for us already? I would also get down to city hall and be knocking on Mayor Pinocchio's door demanding that he have testing done for VC gas in my building. If I lived along Barrie Rd. in particular I would be demanding testing of my basement for gases. So far the Citizens Coalition have been dead on with our scientific, common sense predictions. We told you and them what would happen if they disturbed the site. We predicted that VC Gas would show up off site and that fires and explosions were a real possibility. Well hello! Before anyone is hurt let's act to protect these people. If buildings empty of humans can catch fire at 3 am just think what could happen to people in their homes while asleep. Now that they have admitted and made public that the VC gas is off site and across the road it is time to act. By the way these guys still don't get it. You can not proceed building on this site until you stop the flow off site. Again they are putting the cart before the horse. You can not move the building until you test the entire property properly. You can not complete a risk assessment until you have tested properly. The risk assessment they want to submit will not be accepted by the MOE without clear knowledge of just what is on this site. Save our money council and start the clean up now. Even Doug Lewis agrees that we must clean up not cover up.

Bubble, Bubble Must Mean Trouble
I was driving down Queen St. W. from my mechanics place of business this morning. It had just started to rain a few minutes before and a puddle had formed in what looked like a depression in the road right at West St. As I approached the puddle was bubbling and I decided to stop to investigate. As I stood in the rain watching the boiling I realized that it wasn't a depression in the road but a capped monitoring well the city had placed there. I quickly took a picture and here it is.

Clearly gases of some sort are being vented. Naturally no one would detect these gases unless water covered the area. Seeing that there is vinyl chloride gas under the pile of dirt and throughout the MURF site it wouldn't be a stretch to think the gases bubbling just might be that. Vinyl chloride gas has no smell or colour. I would urge the city to immediately test this spot and naturally seal the leak. Remember vinyl chloride gas is harmful and very explosive at a mere 42 centigrade. A wayward cigarette could ignite with quite an explosive force. We mustn't forget the storage buildings at Dorr Oliver and the mysterious fires there, must we????

Orillia's Hot Spot
For the last almost six years I have been warning the powers that be about some of the Hottest Real Estate in Orillia. Falling on deaf ears and a very sophisticated cover up once again we have evidence that should be very disturbing to the MoE. Again this weekend we have had the sixth mysterious fire in an area of known contamination from the famous if not notorious MURF Chemical Dump Site that mayor and council managed to buy for $1.00. I took a drive down to 223 Matchedash St. where I spoke with neighboring property owners about the fire. They told me that the fire was reported to them as "Suspicious" of unknown origin. Luckily no one was injured as apparently the occupants were out at the time. I snapped a couple of photos. I have also produced a map of the area showing pictures of the other fires locations in question.
As I reported back last January it seems that the GL&V property which had two reported fires actually had two others which never made it to public attention until I was informed by someone who Spoke Out. If you are a regular reader of this Rag as the Mayor of Canada his Honour Pinocchio calls it, you would already know this fact. Naturally there was never any follow up by the Packet which claims to have it's finger on the pulse of our community. Nor did they ever follow up on the Fire Marshals' Report from the two fires at GL&V that was reported. Naturally when we asked to see the same report we were told that it was not public information. Seems that is nothing but a cover up. Here is what I wrote on May 09, 2008 in my truck fire story. I warned mayor and council to smarten up and pay attention.
"For those like mayor and councillors who still don't understand, this truck fire is why the MoE has demanded that a venting system must be put under the parking lot. As I wrote last month, without a venting system vehicles could catch fire spontaneously. Was Wednesday's fire just the latest in this series of Biblical spontaneous fires?????????? I believe it is. Let's hope the Fire Marshals office and Chief Dominelli will allow their report public scrutiny. The GL&V report when asked for by us was denied based on "bullsh*t". this time we will not allow it.
There are houses which back onto this property. In fact one of them I wrote about of how my son's friend was turned down for a mortgage because of "Environmental " concerns. Has mayor and council taken my concern seriously and tested these basements??? Seeing that there has now been this fire, no more than two hundred feet from these houses will they now act???? Will there be criminal negligence charges laid against mayor and council if another Biblical fire were to happen to one of these homes???? Sure hope so. Folk's send this article to the MoE and demand an explanation. Send this information to every Ontario Government Minister. Go down to Matchedash St. S. and see the site. Become a witness in criminal court if anyone is ever harmed when and not if a Biblical fire starts under a house in the area". You can scroll down to May 09 below to see the entire story.
When will Mayor and council take their responsibility for the safety of all those living in that area seriously????? Look at the map I produced below. If any other area of Orillia had six fires within a short three years, within a few hundred feet of each other and, there was no explanation for the fires cause, would mayor and council just ignore them???? These guys spout off about public safety as if they actually cared but do nothing. But this area just keeps getting ignored by those who would be king. After all, people at risk are not of the wealthy variety so they really don't matter do they????. Anybody remember the statement by Wayne Gardy that contaminated land on Atherley Road should be built on for low cost or subsidized housing??? Did anyone but me get upset by that statement???? Well the proof of council's and mayor's concern is in their non action even after they were warned by me right here. Now what???? Most likely nothing as the local neutered news organizations don't have one "gonad" between the two of them. The cover up will just continue.
I can only sit, Speak Out and wait for a tragedy hoping that no one will be seriously hurt the next time we have another "Unexplained, Suspicious Fire". The Plume is moving because of what the mayor and council did on the MURF site with that huge mound of dirt thay left as their legacy of lies and deceit to the people of Orillia. Finally even city's ???experts??? have admitted that the Plume is on the Eastside of West St. They have also admitted that contaminants were found as far as James St. But no talk of what testing if any was done on Cochrane St., Matchedash St. S. and Pougkeepsie St.
Anyway look at the map below and tell me if I am an alarmist or one who has only the best interest of those people who are at risk at heart???? For years some have tried to label me a trouble maker or "Shit Disturber". Isn't it time more people started to disturb the pile this mayor and many councillors dumped on us, including those on council today who continue to ignore the obvious and continue to go along with the original lies and don't Speak Out??? Isn't the safety and lives of those living unknowingly (because of cover up) on top of this time bomb in this area through no fault of their own, worth disturbing the Neanderthals on Andrew St. for????? As I said back in May and for several years before, I can only hope that those responsible will face not just the court of public opinion but possibly criminal court as well, if injury or death should happen. As I have said, it is not a matter of if tragedy will happen but when it will happen. So welcome to "When" ???? Wake up MoE and protect these people. You have the power to order the city to act and act now before someone is hurt. All these buildings must be tested and then vented. Your failure to do your duty will make you responsible along with the gang on Andrew St.
So Brian Hare one more piece of the puzzle for you if you read this rag. No big explosion reported by the neighbours I spoke with, only another "Suspicious" fire for the Sixth Time in just three years. Does one really have to be a Rocket Scientist to figure this one out?????

MURF Site Area of City a Holy Place of Miracle Fires?????
I read with interest about the truck fire down at a Matchedash St. S. Truck compound. I went down there last night around 6 p.m. and found the tractor burned to a crisp, while the trailer which was hooked to the cab looked to be relatively untouched. The ground under and around the burnt tractor is white which can only mean a very hot fire.
What I also found was recent excavation at the edge of the property by the digger in the picture not unlike the digging up of West St. at the time of the GL&V fires..
I also found pooled water indicating that the ground water is higher than the lower areas of the parking lot making a nice path for gas to bubble up.
As you can see the water is pooled even though there has been no precipitation since the day of the fire. I also observed no sign of fuel in the standing water nor smelled any diesel fuel so there was no fuel leak which might have caused a fire. With the water used to put the fire out had there been a fuel leak one would see signs of it in the puddles and for sure smell it. As yet no cause for the fire has been determined according to the Fire Chief, but like with the GL&V fire the police have been called in.
Picture by Courtney Whelan Packet and Times Orillia
Look at how hot the fire is under the truck. if you line up the fireman's feet with the fire you can clearly see that the most intense fire is not the truck but the ground. As well there is no black smoke coming from where the fuel tanks are on the truck. Look at how far back under the trailer the intense fire which can only be described as white hot is burning. this folks is no ordinary fire but one of Biblical nature???
You may remember the GL&V fire which I am convinced was caused by Vinyl Chloride and said so back then. Nothing to date has changed my mind about that scenario and the refusal of the fire department to release the Fire Marshals Report. just confirms my conviction of being right. You may remember my story about our experience with the Fire Marshal Investigator and the Fire Chief who back then was the deputy.
So again we have a Spontaneous fire not unlike the biblical burning bush that Moses saw. We have had two fires that were reported at GL&V and have been told of two others that were kept quiet. These fires resulted in the tearing down of four buildings.
Before After
We were told that these fires were caused by someone who broke into the building, yet after the fire, windows were left wide open for these mythical vandals to gain easier access. Why???? In an attempt to vent the buildings of gas, even the ones that had not caught on fire which is just more proof for my belief that the fire was caused by VC gas?????
Now we have this truck fire starting mysteriously. I would call that an Immaculate Conception Blaze. I am looking forward to the police and Fire Marshal Report on this latest event on a property well within 500 meters of the MURF site that had been tested and confirmed to have MURF site toxins under it. Because of the rains the water table was on top of the ground. Vinyl Chloride Gas is lighter than water and bubbles up to the surface. Now remember this gas will burn at a mere 42 degrees C and can not be put out until the gas burns itself out. It burns real hot, white hot as in the Packet picture. By the look of the cab it was an amazingly hot fire that kept the fire fighters quite far back as the Packet picture shows with no black smoke in the area of the fuel tanks. Diesel burns black and leaves black soot yet there is no trace of this at the site. The picture shows intense fire on top of the ground under the cab and under part of the trailer. If there was no fuel spilled then there should be no fire on the ground. Dirt don't burn do it?????
I couldn't find a diesle truck fire picture but here is one of a pickup truck in New York City.
As is abundantly evident vehicle fires don't burn down at ground level but burn up.
I took this picture of a monitoring well on Queen St. which was bubbling some sort of gas last fall during a rain storm?????? Here is what the bubbling gas looked like.
For those like mayor and councillors who still don't understand, this truck fire is why the MoE has demanded that a venting system must be put under the parking lot. As I wrote last month, without a venting system vehicles could catch fire spontaneously. Was Wednesday's fire just the latest in this series of Biblical spontaneous fires?????????? I believe it is. Danger Danger????
by: jim tolnai Dec. 2004
What does it take for people to wake up and smell the coffee. We have a major industrial dump site in the heart of the city and council seems not to care that proper cleanup is not done. The consequences will be devastating to our environment, health and pocket book. According to the cities own experts who have not done a thorough program of test holes there seems to be a large plume of vinyl chloride directly under the foot print of the MURF building. All anyone has to do is look at the results of three test holes. All of them exceed the MOE limits by as much as 82,000 times
You see three test holes were done back in Sept. and Oct. These holes were done north to south in a straight line. All of them showed excedence by thousands of times and the middle one was actually showing exceedence of 82,000 times higher than safe levels. But the city chose not to order further holes east and west to establish the size of the plume. This decision goes a long way to explaining why excavation only went down four feet instead of the eight feet originally announced. You see the contaminants are in the ground water below the four foot level. Had they hit this contaminant they would have had some major problems so it seems that if we don't hit it, how can it be there??? But what are the dangers of not dealing with these contaminants? In researching other similar sites I have posted two examples on the www.speakingout.biz web-site on the Vapour Migration page.
I will attempt to educate you and possibly council on the consequences of not dealing honestly and safely with these toxins. The first example of a disaster taking place is in Endicott New York. You see IBM has a plant there that spilled toxins on their property not unlike the MURF site. Since 1980 IBM has been frantically trying to save the drinking water supply from contamination. You see once this stuff is in the ground water it will travel for miles contaminating as it goes. It takes years but the process although slow goes on round the clock. IBM realizing the problem did the following.
"Since 1980, IBM has sought to protect the village drinking water supply by halting the spread of groundwater contamination. That process involves the use of pumping wells to capture the contaminated groundwater so it can be treated to remove the VOCs. Although groundwater data indicate that this program has been effective, it typically takes many years (possibly decades) to clean up the groundwater. IBM is currently evaluating possible actions to expedite groundwater source containment and removal. They are also evaluating potential enhancements to the groundwater remedial program that would shrink the plume as quickly as possible so that it is under fewer buildings as time goes on. The results of that evaluation are expected by the end of 2003".
Further problems were encountered as IBM the State of New York and Broome County realized the following.
"In Fall, 2002, New York State, Broome County and IBM determined that there is a potential for migration of the VOCs from the groundwater through the soil as vapors into buildings above. Consequently, the Agencies and IBM developed an action plan to determine whether vapor migration related to the groundwater contamination is occurring, and, if so, to cut off the vapor migration pathways. The results of the investigation indicate that vapor migration has impacted the indoor air in buildings above the plume. As of July 2003, IBM had identified and offered to install vapor mitigation systems at 480 properties in the Village of Endicott and the Town of Union. The agencies estimate that 85 to 95 % of the buildings which need mitigation systems to intercept the IBM-related contaminant vapors have now been identified".
How much more evidence do people need that what is happening down on West St. is just not right. What will it take for people to understand that this stuff has short term effects but that the long term effects are far worse. As this stuff creeps underground over the years it will affect any building it comes into contact with that has cracks in it's foundation. Not only that but as the MURF will be built directly above the plume as cracks in the foundation occur (and there will be cracks) the building will become a dangerous place to use. You see we are dealing with levels of 41,000 parts per billion. The MOE says that anything over .5 parts is hazardous. Do you or I have to be experts to figure out that we have a problem? And these guys say it is an acceptable risk. Acceptable to who? The sick child and it's family or to councillors and experts who are untouched. Shame
