Our Mission

Hello my name is Jim Tolnai. I decided to publish my news letter Speaking Out back in Oct./2002 after much soul searching. Over the years I have become increasingly dis-illusioned by politicians and political parties as a whole. I ran for city council in 2000 but did not get elected. It was an excellent experience and I urge everyone to at least try it once. After the election our local paper the Packet & Times found out that our new Mayor (Ron Stevens) had taken illegal campaign contributions. Upon being notified the Mayor rushed to the city clerk and paid $2,000 into city coffers representing the illegal portion of the contribution. The mayor and this council claimed that the contribution was not illegal and the mayor paid the money out just in case it was. I and another candidate asked for an audit to determine if the mayor had breached the election act but were turned down flat by council. In their opinion we just had sour grapes for losing the election and besides it would cost too much money. My friend and I offered to pay for the audit on condition that we be repaid if the mayor was found in breach. We offered $5,000 and were turned down on the grounds that what if it would cost more. At this point I decided not to pursue the issue. A grave mistake that I feel very sorry about.
Fast forward to 2002 and the provincial governments attempt to privatize our electrical system. I worked hard as many others did but privatization did go through although the sale of Hydro One and the Power grid was stopped by a court challenge. Having become frustrated with trying to get my view out through our two newspapers I decided to publish my own news letter. This endeavor is a personal attempt at informing our citizens of just what our politicians and their parties are doing to us. I take no money from anyone and the entire cost of about $3,000 for the year is born by myself and my family.
If anyone wants to contribute a letter or story they are most welcome to do so. I promise not to edit and will print the item as long as the article or letter is the truth. Speaking Out is published once a month and will be posted to this web-site as well as 1,600 copies delivered by Canada post to all local business in Orillia.
Thanks for visiting and do come back often as the content is ever changing.
